# X Resumes Operation in Brazil After Resolution of Legal Standoff
X is returning to service in Brazil following a prolonged standoff with the country’s federal supreme court, headed by Minister Alexandre de Moraes. The platform was suspended on August 31, after orders from de Moraes were upheld by other justices. The issue arose when Musk, owner of X, defied court requests to ban certain accounts and remove content deemed illegal under Brazilian law.
The supreme court stated that the company has now complied with conditions set by de Moraes, allowing X to resume operations. Brazil's internet regulations are designed to curb hate speech and misinformation, requiring tech companies to have a local representative. Initially, Musk resisted these demands, even closing X's Brazilian headquarters temporarily.
However, investor pressure pushed X to adhere to Brazilian legislation to avoid daily penalties. The court had previously moved to freeze X's business accounts in Brazil, along with those of SpaceX's Starlink. During X's suspension, competing platforms like Bluesky and Threads gained millions of new Brazilian users. Access to X resumed after the court granted permission.
